Please provide examples of how you have shown passion and had positive impact in your career
(Approx 100-300 words)

I have demonstrated sustained passion and positive impact in my career by intentionally aligning my academic trajectory with the educational realities faced by children and families, ensuring that my work contributes to inclusive and socially responsive learning environments.

My transition from microbiology into early childhood STEM education was directly inspired by my experiences as both a scientist and a mother. When my two sons experienced speech delays, I began actively searching for innovative ways to support their language development. This led me to explore digital educational games, board games, and wordless picture books, many of which are science-based and address climate change and environmental issues, using visual storytelling rather than text alone. Through this process, I became acutely aware of how traditional, language-intensive approaches to science learning can exclude young children who are still developing verbal communication skills.

This personal motivation catalysed my passion for early childhood STEM and environmental education and directly informed the development of Renewable Rangers, an initiative designed to make complex scientific concepts accessible to young learners regardless of language proficiency. Therefore, by integrating self-directed learning, visual literacy, and environmental education, Renewable Rangers positions children as capable meaning-makers and supports engagement with sustainability and renewable energy concepts in developmentally appropriate and inclusive ways.

The positive impact of my work extends across research, teaching, and supervision. I intentionally design inclusive learning experiences that promote agency, reflection, and participation, particularly for learners whose voices are still emerging. Through this work, I contribute to advancing more equitable, innovative, and impactful approaches to early science education.

About Rising Star

The Rising Star Programme, operated by BlackBark Productions, has been established for the purposes of recognising, celebrating and connecting young talented people who have a capacity for achievement and success and who contribute in an inspirational manner to the future of our nation. The qualities that elevate Rising Stars to the top go beyond performance and technical excellence. Rising Stars are polished, brilliant individuals with tremendous promise and great talent who excel for reasons that go far beyond their technical abilities alone.

Talented people make things happen, are highly committed to achieving goals, innovate very rapidly, and create a great deal of value (for companies and/or themselves) when their talent is spotted and harnessed.

The Programme aims to be a significant and sustainable vehicle through which organisations, our country and our continent can identify and nurture these “organisational and national assets” who are set to play a key role in shaping the future of our country and our continent.
