| During my time at Exxaro, I played an active role in developing local capability and strengthening community participation by implementing the inbound delivery service using a newly formed SMME. I personally coached the small business on how our systems, processes, and operational requirements worked, enabling them to confidently manage the delivery of critical spare parts on the mine. Being born in the same communities we served, I also demonstrated responsible engagement by motivating Grade 11 and 12 learners through school outreach programmes. I approached these sessions with empathy and respect, ensuring learners felt valued, heard, and supported in their career ambitions. This upheld Exxaro’s social responsibility values and created a positive, lasting impact on young people in the region. At Valterra, I continue to build on this commitment by working closely with sustainability teams to account for and reduce Scope 3 emissions linked to the materials we procure and move through the value chain. This includes designing logistics strategies that lower environmental impact and contribute to long-term sustainability goals. Beyond operational work, I helped establish a cycling team with the intention of expanding it into the local communities where we operate. Recently, we participated in a charity cycling event in Mpumalanga and raised over R100,000 to fund specialised equipment for children living with disabilities, further strengthening our social contribution. As an Industrial Engineer, I also ensure that every facilitation session I lead creates psychological safety for participants. I encourage open dialogue, active listening, and constructive challenge, empowering teams to raise issues freely, contribute ideas, and take ownership of improvement initiatives. This approach consistently drives collaboration, trust, and sustainable performance improvement across the organisation. |
